Study Tips

How to score a 5 on AP Micro

Proven strategies from 8+ years of tutoring AP Microeconomics.

Master the Graphs

AP Micro is graph-heavy — practice drawing and interpreting every graph type until you can sketch them from memory. Know what shifts each curve and how equilibrium changes.

Know Market Structures Cold

Production, cost, and market structures make up over a third of the exam. Memorize the characteristics and graph shapes for all four structures: perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly, and monopolistic competition.

Practice FRQs Under Timed Conditions

Use past FRQs from College Board and practice with strict time limits. The free-response section requires clear, structured answers — practice makes the difference between a 4 and a 5.

Connect Concepts to Real Examples

Understanding why firms behave differently in each market structure makes the theory stick. Use real-world examples to anchor abstract concepts like deadweight loss and price discrimination.

Focus on Common Mistake Areas

Surplus vs. shortage, shifting the right curve, and remembering that MR=MC applies everywhere — these are the areas where students lose the most points. Drill them until they're second nature.
